Sherriff, R(obert) C(edric)

English dramatist. He is remembered for the antiheroic war play Journey's End (1928). Later plays include Badger's Green (1930) and Home at Seven (1950). His film scripts include The Invisible Man (1933), Goodbye Mr Chips (1939) and The Dambusters (1955).

Born in Hampton Wick, Surrey, Sherriff worked in an insurance company belonging to his father. His later plays failed to repeat the success of Journey's End.
