Wesker, Arnold

English dramatist. A leading writer of kitchen-sink drama, his socialist beliefs were reflected in the successful trilogy Chicken Soup with Barley, Roots, and I'm Talking About Jerusalem (1958–60). He established a catchphrase with the title of his play Chips with Everything (1962). His autobiography As Much as I Dare was published in 1994.

Born in London to a working-class Jewish family, his early experiences and attempts to earn a living provided much of the material for his plays. In 1961 Wesker tried unsuccessfully to establish a working-class theatre with trade-union backing at the Round House in London. Later plays include The Merchant (1978) and Lady Othello (1987). He wrote the screenplay for the film Maudie (1995).
